Creative Technology

Bachelor, University of Twente

This section includes projects from the bachelor Creative Technology at the University of Twente. The programme combines engineering, programming and digital media with design. Through these projects, experience was built in interactive systems, software development and creative prototyping, resulting in a mix of technical and creative skills.

Graduation
Project

For my graduation project, I created Rethread, a card game designed to raise awareness among teenagers about the impact of fast fashion. The game was connected to an online platform where players could find information, connect with others, reflect on their habits, and take on challenges aimed at reducing their fashion footprint.

Ancient Allies

This video addresses a widespread misconception about the domestication of dogs. The video was drawn and animated in Blender 2D. For the final editing, the film editor DaVinci Resolve was used

MAYA

A 3D exploration game set on a Mayan/Aztec-inspired island, developed in a team of three. The player navigates the environment as a cat, collecting objects to progress through the game.
Main contributions included modelling and texturing environmental assets (rocks, vegetation, ruins, temple elements), sound design and implementation of a dynamic audio system using FMOD. Background music was composed and produced from scratch. Additional work included basic animations and integration within Unity.

Blender & Unity

In Blender, I developed a series of 3D models and animations focused on game-ready assets. One example is a mechanical walker, designed with optimisation in mind for real-time use in Unity. Beyond modelling, I independently rigged and animated the walker to create a functional walk cycle.

Another project involved animating a sack of flour, exploring how movement can convey emotion through timing and weight. The animation was integrated into Unity and made controllable through key input.

In addition to 3D work, I created a 2D animation in Blender synchronised to a predefined sound fragment, focusing on rhythm and visual timing.

Within Unity, I built interactive prototypes and small game environments, working on scripting, gameplay logic and real-time interaction. This included developing functional mechanics, testing playability and iterating on design decisions.

3D Models

Several more basic models have been placed in an environemnt using unity and can be viewed on yanvol.itch.io

Homewards

An art installation based on the themes "The Other Side" and "Okaerinasai" inspired by lighthouses as symbols of hope and return. Using lasers and sound, the installation guides viewers through an emotional shift from tension to relief. The project combined physical installation, audio design and experiential storytelling.

Machine Learning

Beside learning the theory, projects focused on applied machine learning, including training LSTM models for movement recognition using Movella sensors, resulting in a simplified “Just Dance”-style interaction system. Additional projects involved building image classification models (e.g. distinguishing a chihuahua from a blueberry muffin) and experimenting with stock market prediction based on sentiment analysis of Reddit data.

B.I.R.D.

Bioacoustic Intelligent Recording Device — a system designed to monitor bird species through machine learning. The device records environmental audio and uses a custom algorithm to detect the call of the Grey Heron. When detected, additional sensor data is collected and transmitted to a local server for monitoring and analysis. The project combined hardware integration, signal processing and machine learning.

Interactive Posters

A series of interactive visual projects coded in Processing. One example is a poster inspired by The Red Turtle (2016), where user interaction triggers animated events such as storms, shipwrecks and environmental effects. These projects explored interaction design through code and visual storytelling.
